License Key (Registration Key)
What is the license key?
The license key (registration key) converts the demo version of webPDF into a full version. You receive the registration key when you purchase a license for webPDF, i.e. when you license webPDF. The registration key is an alphanumeric string consisting of five blocks of six characters each, separated by hyphens. You receive the license key in the form of a license certificate (PDF document).
Is a license key required for each major version?
A matching license key is required for each major version or each new major version following a webPDF update.
A license key from an older major version cannot be used unchanged for a newer major version. If you want to switch to a new major version — for example from version 9 to version 10 — you will therefore need a license key issued for that version. Conversely, a new license key also works unchanged for an older version, i.e. a version key for version 10 also works for version 9.
When is a new license key required?
A new license key (registration key) is generally required when you:
- want to convert a demo installation into a full version
- are switching from an older major version to a newer major version
- are planning a technical upgrade of your existing installation
You should request the new registration key before your technical update, as updating to a newer major version will otherwise put the updated installation back into demo mode.
What role does a subscription play?
With an active Subscription you get access to new program versions within the scope of the subscription terms. In this case, the appropriate license update — i.e. a new license key (registration key) — can be provided for the target version.
If no active subscription exists, a separate offer is generally required for the update to a new major version.
How do I request a new license key?
Send a brief e-mail to our licensing department (or sales team) or submit a request via the contact form. We will review your request and any existing subscription and then issue the new registration key. You will then receive a license certificate (PDF document) containing the new registration key.
What information should you have ready for the review?
To enable the licensing department or sales to process your request quickly, the following details are helpful:
- currently used webPDF version
- desired target version
- company name of the licensee
- existing license certificate, existing license key, or subscription ID
- number of affected server licenses or instances
What happens after the review?
After the review you will receive either:
- the information that your existing subscription covers the upgrade, or
- an offer for the update to the desired major version
Once the review is complete, the appropriate license key for the new version can be provided and sent to you electronically as a PDF document by e-mail.
What do I do with the license key?
You receive the license key in a PDF document as a license certificate. The certificate contains the license key (registration key) together with your name as the licensee. Both pieces of information are required to activate the license. You enter this information via the Admin Portal in webPDF. Further information can be found in the Developer Hub on the "License Activation" page.
